The morning starts early in Sri Lanka, just as the tropical sun begins to break through the palm trees. By 7:30 AM, Northwestern Province is already alive with the sounds of local street vendors, tuk-tuks, and school children dressed in pristine white uniforms walking to class.
Heading to the Project
As a school development volunteer with the DIWASI program, my daily walk to the local primary school is one of my favorite routines. Alongside two other volunteers, we pass lush paddy fields and friendly villagers who wave and call out 'Ayubowan' (the traditional Sri Lankan greeting wishing you a long life). The atmosphere is immediately welcoming.
Interactive Learning in Action
Our goal for the day is to conduct interactive conversational English sessions. Rather than relying solely on dry blackboard exercises, we bring lessons to life through educational games, group activities, and songs. Today, we're teaching action verbs and prepositions using a classroom treasure hunt.

The kids are incredibly eager to learn. Their enthusiasm is infectious. We divide them into small groups, ensuring everyone gets a chance to participate. Local teachers observe and take notes, creating a collaborative exchange of teaching methodologies.
Community Development & Painting
In the afternoon, after school hours, our focus shifts to structural improvement. A key pillar of the DIWASI program is leaving a sustainable physical impact. Today, we're painting a colorful educational mural on the library wall. We paint world maps, solar systems, and inspirational quotes, transforming a once-gray room into an inspiring space for reading and study.
Winding Down
By 3:30 PM, we wrap up and head back to our host family. Over a hot cup of Ceylon tea and freshly made coconut roti, we sit together to debrief and plan for the next day. It’s hard work, but knowing we are making a genuine, community-led difference makes every minute worthwhile.
